Merging data using Excel

In research projects, it is often necessary to use data from different sources. In this workshop, we discuss how you can combine different data sets into a single data set that you can use for analysis. We show you how to do this using Excel, and discuss common issues using hands-on examples using databases such as Compustat and Datastream.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to use Excel to:

  • recognize the structure of your data;
  • restructure your data as needed;
  • merge several different datasets into a single set.

For whom?

Advanced bachelor and master students, in particular those starting work on their thesis.

Prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required, but some experience with Excel and working with databases is recommended. We recommend that you go through the online course Working with data before coming to the workshop.

Combination course

The workshop on Finding economic data directly precedes this workshop. You can register for that workshop as well if you would like to learn more about using the databases available at the VU.

Costs

Free for VU and VUmc students and staff, for others the terms of services apply.

Data samenvoegen in Excel

  • de structuur van je data herkennen;
  • de structuur van je data aanpassen zoals nodig;
