Data Conversations: sharing, linking and analysing personal data Online

Since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU, its Dutch counterpart AVG and implementation law UAVG in 2018, researchers working with personal data have become more aware of the legislation and ethical issues surrounding the protection of research subjects' privacy. The legislation is quite strict, and researchers need to take robust measures to adhere to it. At the VU, Privacy Champions have been established to support researchers with complying with the GDPR while carrying out their research in a doable fashion.  Parallel to this development, the Open Data movement has gained traction, and researchers are increasingly expected - and willing - to share their own data and/or reuse data that were collected by others. The legal need and ethical imperative to protect participants' privacy and the wish to share data, knowledge and research, seem to be at odds with each other. How can we share data but still protect them adequately?

Rosalie Salameh, Privacy Champion at the Faculty for Behavioural and Movement Sciences, will give an introduction about the requirements of the GDPR, and Eveline de Zeeuw, previously assistant professor at the Netherlands Twin Register will present on The Open Data Infrastructure for Social Sciences and Economic Innovations (ODISSEI). ODISSEI has supported the development of a secure platform on the high-performance compute facility at SURF allowing large-scale analysis of cohort data linked to administrative data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Come and share your research data stories and hear others. Find the registration button at the bottom of this page.  At the moment, Data Conversations take place online. You will receive an email with a Zoom link after your registration.

About the speakers

Rosalie Salameh, LLM. is a legal advisor with work experience in the private sector and with various research and higher education institutions. Since 2020, she has been a Privacy Champion at the VU Faculty of Behavourial and Movement Sciences (FGB), advising on privacy and data protection policy and assisting FGB researchers with privacy and data protection-related queries. During her talk, Rosalie will briefly address three key data protection topics relevant to researchers: the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), informed consent and data sharing or re-use.

Eveline de Zeeuw is working as a researcher at the Inspectorate for Education and, amongst others, utilizes register data to give a yearly overview on the state of basic education in the Netherlands. Previously, she was an assistant professor at the department of Biological Psychology, which hosts the Netherlands Twin Register (www.tweelingenregister.vu.nl), employing behaviour genetics to get more insight in student, teacher and family factors that influence educational achievement.

Data Conversations will feature a series of short talks from researchers or colleagues who support research. Each talk will be about 10 minutes long and there will be time for a Q&A session. There will be a discussion in smaller groups to give you an opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues across the VU.

Who should attend?

Data Conversations brings together researchers, research support staff, and data management, and data science experts from all subject areas. Early career researchers as well as experienced academics are welcome to attend.

About Data Conversations

Data Conversations started at the University of Lancaster in the UK. The Lancaster Data Conversations aim to bring data practitioners together to talk about how researchers create, collect, use and share data. The Data Conversations at the VU Amsterdam share the same aim and are intended to provide a forum for researchers from different subjects and disciplines to exchange practices and ideas around open data, FAIR data, research data management and related open science topics.
