ART SCIENCE dialogue: GOVERNANCE AND CONTROL

ART SCIENCE dialogue: GOVERNANCE AND CONTROL In-Person

Join us at the Art Science Gallery for an exciting conversation about Governance and Control. Everyone interested is welcome to the gallery; students, researchers, teachers and support, art and science enthusiasts from outside the VU - we look forward to seeing you all in our cozy gallery space at 16:00 on 21 September!

Topic: GOVERNANCE AND CONTROL

As Facebook, Google and Twitter have changed how we consume information, how can we avoid that commercial companies control and dictate what constitutes knowledge? In the ART SCIENCE dialogue Governance and Control we examine a number of independent platforms.

Constant Dullaart has created a platform, common.garden, built on universal democratic values. Throughout his practice, artist Constant Dullaart examines the boundaries of manipulating Google, Facebook and Instagram. Through common.garden Dullaart reflects on the broad cultural and social effects of communication and image processing technologies owned by mega corporations.

Jean-Sébastian Caux’ is a professor in theoretical condensed matter physics the University of Amsterdam. In his free time he co-created the scientific platform Scipost. Scipost is an independent, not-for-profit, open access publication portal for scientific papers.

Philipp Koelinger is a professor in social science genetics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During his career he has become an advocate for the decentralized approach in making research accessible through the use of blockchain.

By creating independent platforms, Dullaart, Caux and Koelinger are each attempting to break free from the power of commercial companies. In the ART SCIENCE dialogue we will share experiences and discuss the difficulties of managing an open platform. How do you govern and control the integrity of knowledge on an open platform?

The ART SCIENCE dialogues and related exhibition Creating the Commons are organised in collaboration with VU Open Science Programme, Open Science Community Amsterdam (OSCA), Network Institute, LI-MA and Sanneke Huisman.
