Workshop: Community building for Citizen Science In-Person

Join us for an interactive workshop about community management and dialogue. Getting started with Citizen Science is no mean feat, but it can be very rewarding if done correctly! The VU University library supports citizen science trough their Science in the Cloud project. This workshop is meant for researchers and other staff thinking of adding a Citizen Science component to their research. It builds from experience and literature. This session will get you started with a communication plan to build and sustain a thriving community for your project.

About the speakers 

Sem Barendse  

Sem Barendse is the dialogue coordinator at Vrije Universiteit. As a dialogue researcher and lecturer, he started the Network Science in Dialogue this year together with Frank Kupper. The goal? To give dialogue a permanent place in the working methods of researchers.

Bram Kreuger  

Bram currently works as product manager for the Science in the Cloud project at the VU Library. This project aims to facilitate Citizen Science in Amsterdam by offering support with knowledge, technology, and community management. Bram has a background in Artificial Intelligence, where he worked on co-designing and crowdsourcing for information systems in low resource environments. He also works as a freelance AI trainer and consultant.

Location

The workshop will take place at VU Library Launch, in the Main Building. Go to the 1st floor and enter the Library there. As you walk through the study are you will see the chairs and the screen prepared for the workshop. You can aslo ask the lending deskst for assistance.

What to expect?

There will be a presentation about the Network Science in Dialogue and  a practical workshop from a colleague who supports Citizen Science research.  There will be opportunities for discussion and sharing ides.

Don't miss the free lunch at the beginning of the event!  

Who should attend?

During the workshop you will learn about community building for Citizen Science, do an exercise with a project idea during which you create a communication plan, learn practical tips and strategies and learn about KennisCloud, a platform that can be used for your project.

Our meeting is meant to bring together researchers, research support staff, and data management, and data science experts from all subject areas. Students, early career researchers as well as experienced academics are welcome to attend.

Lena Karvovskaya

Lena Karvovskaya is VU Amsterdam's Research Data Management (RDM) and Open Science Community Manager. She visits RDM expertise meetings and conferences at home and abroad and takes care of the proper dissemination of the latest knowledge throughout VU Amsterdam. 

Lena has a PhD in theoretical linguistics and previously worked as a research data manager at Utrecht University Library.
